Children go through social, physical, intellectual (cognitive), creative and emotional development. Handling early childhood development to caregivers, teachers and parents is important, because without proper nurturing, interaction and stimulus a child can experience severe developmental delays that prevent future success. Social and emotional development can begin as early as birth, but these developments tend to be primordial and limited until the child is no longer a toddler, according to MentalHelp.net. This is the period when children begin to develop the abilities to interact with others. These interactions can range from social settings which can naturally lead to emotions such as fright, nervousness, irritability, anger and frustration as the child determines that he cannot control everyone and everything--including himself--within his environment. It can also bring about joy, happiness, surprise, gleefulness, curiosity and a sense of accomplishment as the child realizes he is in control of some situations. These feelings will continue, become more intense and multiply as the child grows into an adult. Child development has being categorized as follows, Piaget was a Swiss theorist who posited that children learn actively through the play process. He suggested that the adult's role in helping the child learn was to provide appropriate materials for the child to interact and construct. He would use Socratic questioning to get the children to reflect on what they were doing. He would try to get them to see contradictions in their explanations. He also developed stages of development. His approach can be seen in how the curriculum is sequenced in schools, and in the pedagogy of preschool centers across the united states. Different aspects of development involve different patterns and causes of change, so there is no simple way to summarize child development. Nevertheless, the answering of certain questions about each topic can yield comparable information about various aspects of developmental change. The following questions were suggested for this purpose by Waters and his colleagues. ? What develops? What relevant aspects of the individual change over a period of time? ? What are the rate and speed of development? ? What are the mechanisms of development - what aspects of experience and heredity cause developmental change? ? Are there normal individual differences in the relevant developmental changes? ? Are there population differences in this aspect of development (for example, differences in the development of boys and of girls)?
