English as a Global Language Ask anyone in the world for a list of their top 10 favourite books, and chances are they?ll mention about a few books written in English. This is a testament to English being a global language. But what is global language? Well, it has been defined as a language which is learned by many people as second language spoken worldwide, use in many international companies and organizations. In other words, it?s a language that?s all over the place. A sort of Lingua Franca, I suppose. It is possible that English is the lingua franca of the modern world. It serves as the main form of spoken communication in most parts of the world and it is in this light that people should learn English: To better communicate with people from different countries. The downside of this though, is that the English language is often regarded (or accused, pick your preferred term?.) of being the ?killer language?. That it wipes out smaller languages as well as the cultures they represent. It is possible though that the problem here is not English itself, but English-speakers. The grave problem (possibly) is when English is ?enforced? as the only language to speak in certain venues. In the southern united states, for example, there are those who sneer that Latin-American immigrants should ?learn the language or go home.? The ironic thing about this closed-minded statement is that much of the southern United States used to be officially part of Mexico. It is this closed attitude of many English speakers (and English-speaking nations) that others should learn their language is effectively killing other beautiful world languages. So tolerance in this case would come a long way. The English language is represented on every continent and on islands in the three major oceans, making the label ?global language ?a reality. And as proof, think about it: what other language could you expect people to speak almost anywhere that you go? English speakers will visit places like germany or china without even glancing through a travel dictionary. Could foreigners come to America (sorry, lack of imagination with english speaking countries here) with the same expectations? Not if they wanted to be able to get themselves around safely. So although it?s true that in modern times, we seem to be moving closer and closer to a global society and the internet has opened ways to communicate with people across the world that we otherwise would never have met, there are a lot more businesses and web-based media in English-speaking nations that are transmitted in English. So it doesn?t come as a surprise that English is one of the strongest languages in the world That the importance of English as a global language is something the world can never ignore. No matter where you are in the world, English is a global language and once you should really consider mastering. By learning English, you can get a better job. I mean even as a 27 year old man from a third world country looking for a job or job opportunities (ahem? ahem), you are likely to have a better chance when you have a good background of English. You would want a good working knowledge of it have a better career but more importantly, keep up-to-date with world events and developments. Remember too, that 85% of all written material in the world is written in English ? as a good a reason as any to learn it.
