Teach English in ShAnwangping Zhen [Yuquan XiAng] - Chongqing
The aspect of english Language Teaching that I have learned the most about during this course is lesson planning. It has helped me immensely to get acquainted with the ESA structure, which I find systematic enough to give lessons a framework, but still flexible enough to allow for the incorporation of different objectives and activities. Having to modify some of my lesson plans after submission helped me realise how important it is to include a "Study" phase during the lesson. Learning about the english language itself was a good review of what I had already learned as a non-native speaker of english during my school years. Most of the material on grammar or phonetics was therefore not new to me (having a background in linguistics as well). However, having to come up with appropriate activities for each aspect of grammar and each new structure was a new challenge and a very useful exercise for me. I enjoyed coming up with activities or games of my own or reading different ESL websites to see what ideas other teachers of english have used. The course has also helped me to think from the learners' perspective and to be aware the different needs and expectations that I am likely to encounter during the course of my teaching career. I feel I am therefore better prepared to cater for different needs, and have the tools available to prepare my lessons. Learning about the different tools available to a teacher (other than the course book) and getting the possibility to try my hand at the possible uses of these tools makes me more confident that I will be able to come up with interesting and varied lesson plans. So far I have only taught individual students or smaller groups in an informal setting. Having finished this course, I plan to apply to smaller, local language schools, public schools for adult education and possibly kindergartens in the south of Germany. Once in the job, I will definitely be using the lesson plan template provided during this course and will keep referring back to the information and advice provided on different learner types and the different teaching methods. I expect that I will still make a lot of mistakes, especially in the beginning, but having completed this course and having a foundation and a point of reference, I also expect that I will be able to spot these much quicker than I otherwise could. Currently attending a German language course, I have also realised that my awareness of teaching techniques has increased during the past few months. I am consciously observing my own teachers - their approach, their use of methods and their behaviour in the classroom. I hope to be able to put the theoretical knowledge I have acquired during this TEFL course into practice soon.
