English as a Global LanguageEnglish has become the language of choice for anyone pursuing a career in medicine, law, or any technical subject. Over a billion people speak English worldwide, and it is one of the United Nations six official languages. English is a global language and this essay will explain why it has become the unofficial lingua franca for people all over the world. During the eighteenth century, empire building coincided with a period of British naval dominance, allowing the English to spread all over the world, bringing with them their culture, religion, and language. They considered it their duty to share these advancements with the local populations of Australasia and the Americas, as well as several African and Asian nations. Furthermore, the near constant warfare between European nations during this period meant that the English mingled freely with civilians wherever they went. European nations having a predominant influence over countries all around the world prevailed until the culmination of the Second World War. After the Second World War, most of the previous world powers were suffering massive losses. Only two exceptions to this existed, the Soviet Union, who were large enough to absorb their manpower losses and who had in fact, thanks to Allied aid, come out of the war in a more sound technological and material position than they had been before it, and America. America had entered the war late, relying on their isolationist policy until the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour. They were also separated geographically from the worst of the war?s excesses. In this way, they managed to become the new world power, still speaking English. The American impact on the world was, if anything, even more extreme than that of the British. Innovations in travel and communication combined with attempts to improve international relations after the world wars meant that the English language was having more and more influence in other countries. American participation in korea, vietnam, and the Middle East allowed them to interact with the locals, while their constant passive aggression with the Soviet Union meant that Russians in government posts were also encouraged by their higher ups to learn English. This global history of English being spoken and spread by whoever was the world power of the time has left its mark on current relations. While only the third most common native language (after Mandarin and Spanish), English is the most commonly known language around the world. In any situation in which individuals are unfamiliar with each other?s native tongue, English has become the common trade language, or lingua franca. This is partially because it is commonly taught in schools all around the world, and partially due to the way it has developed to incorporate technical terms and jargon in a way few other languages can match. English has also risen to prominence amongst languages for its adoption by creators of entertainment, such as in movies and television programs produced in Hollywood, in songs created by classic bands, and popular internet sites. English entertainment can act as both a motivation for speakers of other languages to learn English, and as a fun learning tool to aid them in their goal. English has risen in popularity and frequency of use to the level in which it can be definitively deemed a global language, thanks to its use by some of the world?s most powerful nations, its usefulness in technical situations, and its use in popular forms of modern entertainment.
