I feel that I have grown a lot through this course. Although I am an english mother tongue speaker and am able to communicate effectively in english, it does not necessarily meant that I will be able to teach others to understand and communicate in english. Even having a passion or aptitude for teaching is not enough. I have also learned through this course that there are numerous tried and tested methods and techniques that work in an EFL situation. This has opened my eyes and made the way ahead clearer for me. I have never studied grammar and often don?t see the point in it either, but through this course I have come to recognize the value and importance of teaching grammar to EFL students ? all be it limited. I do very strongly believe in practical application of and engagement with a subject and so I really enjoyed working with the ESA approach. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn how EFL lesson plans are made and benefitted from that in more than just the arena of english language study. I plan to study the diploma course and then I hope to be able to implement a programme in rural parts of India once that has been completed. We are involved with NGOs in India and Northeast India in language-related work (mother tongue literacy etc). The overwhelming need that has been identified is that the facilitators and others involved in the projects need to upgrade their english levels. Not all of them are at the same level, but all of them need to improve their english skills. I have been requested to design a programme that is tailor-made to suit their situation, cultural background and to be used on the ground where they are based. This will be very challenging and I am hoping to gain insight and assistance in the year ahead into how this can be implemented.
