Classroom MagementSkilled classroom management is absolutely necessary in order to have a productive learning environment. To be a good teacher you don?t necessarily have to be an extroverted kind of person, many good teachers are calm and easy going in the classroom. According to the TEFL training course material in ITTT Unit 5, ?Classroom Management is the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly, relaxed manner and maintaining discipline.? Establishing rapport is an important part of maintaining a successful classroom. students must be in a relaxed atmosphere and to be able to get along with the teacher. It is important to establish a good rapport early on to avoid problems in later classes. Once a good rapport is established, the students will be able to get the most of the lessons in a comfortable learning environment. Part of establishing a good rapport is the use of the students? names. Using students? names throughout the lesson is very important. By calling on students using their names, in particularly when the name is said at the end of the question, you can organize an activity better, give acknowledgement to the students, indicate who is to answer or respond, and to also keep students alert through the lesson. Classroom arrangement can always play a vital part in keeping the students interest in the lesson. There are a number of things to be considered when making seating arrangements such as space available, student personality, type of chairs/tables, the age of the students and nationality of the students. The seating can be in circles and horseshoes, separate tables or orderly rows, depending on how you want to arrange everyone. It is important to remember to mix students who are weaker with stronger ones in order to maintain the learning curve. To help keep a well balanced learning curve the teacher must juggle between Teacher talking time and student talking time. An important part about learning a language is being surrounded by it. The best source of the natural language is from the native speaking English teacher. However the teacher must avoid unnecessary teacher talking time in order to allow students to speak and practice their annunciation while building their confidence in the language. A good way of building the students? confidence is having them understand what is expected of them in the class before beginning activities. The teacher has to use simple language, be consistent with the wording of the instructions, use visual clues to reinforce instruction, and checking back with the class to make sure everyone understands the directions. Providing individual attention to certain students who are weaker with the language is sometimes necessary. The teacher might find it vital to spend a longer time with students who do not understand or who cannot do the task, while at the same time asking the rest of the students to continue with their tasks. The teacher must also recognize how to include all students equally in any kind of activity going on in the class. This can provide great aid in avoiding unnecessary problematic behavior throughout the lessons. If proper classroom management in enforced, the students and the teacher will find themselves in a learning process that is successful and enjoyable at the same time.
