This course from ITTT has been incredibly valuable in promoting self-evaluation of my teaching performance. As an experienced teacher in the EFL field, I have already seen firsthand many of the situations and examples described within the course, and have been given the chance to determine the quality, or weakness, in my own methods of instruction. Through the units I have not only solidified my existing grammar knowledge, but have been made aware of some of the ways to approach the more subtle issues that arise in EFL instruction, such as the factors involved in student motivation and methods for assessing student performance or placement. In addition, the ESA approach has been an incredibly insightful and unambiguous way of presenting a lesson to a class; the ESA method provides structure and a clear plan for introducing, explaining, and reinforcing a lesson. It also reveals the flaws in a plan, including the amount of teacher talking time, or a lack of proper material activation. Finally, the activities for various grammar lessons, phases, and specific needs are some of the most valuable pieces of information gleaned from the course. Being exposed to such a variety makes it all too clear that recycling the same handful of activities can create stagnation, student frustration, or even apathy on the part of the teacher and students. In all, this course has shown me the efficacy of the approaches I have used so far, and has revealed the areas that could use some improvement, as well as given me innumerable ideas for activities and ways to keep student motivation high. It is not only I that benefit from the improvement of my performance, but my students both present and future, as well.
