Why complete a TEFL courseThere are many reasons one could choose to complete a tefl course. This will of course vary from person to person. One might complete a course simply out of interest, or to improve their grasp of the English language. Many people likely complete tefl courses to aid in the acquisition of a job teaching English in a country where it is a foreign language. If one has already secured a position but wishes to better prepare themselves, or raise their earning potential, then the completion of a tefl course is certainly a suitable and responsible project to take on. A tefl course allows the student to work and live in a country where they would otherwise be hard-pressed to find employment. By living in a distant country one has the possibility to experience a completely new physical and cultural environment. They also have the opportunity to positively, and directly, affect the lives of people they would normally have no contact with. TEFL affords opportunities for the broadening of one's perspective and meaningful personal growth. I certainly considered the benefits of living and working in a different country when deciding to take a tefl course. I had two other major considerations as well. The first one was fostering a solid sense of preparation for a job in south korea that I had secured. I felt as though simply having a B.A was not enough. I had to review the major grammatical points of the English language. I had to have basic tenets of good teaching gestating in my mind. TEFL gave me those options. The second major reason for choosing to complete this course was the higher earning potential I stood to gain. If better qualified for the position the teacher stood to earn more money, which is an intriguing possibility for obvious reasons. I chose to take an online tefl course because of its incredible convenience and flexibility. Some students of TEFL may argue that the online avenue is somewhat inferior to the in person course. I however am of the opinion that the online course was perfectly adequate given that it covered all of the information I would receive in an actual TEFL classroom, and it was really the only way I realistically could complete the course. It is very difficult to find the time to attend a regular class, especially when one is employed part time or committed to various other projects. Thus I found the online course to be satisfactory and quite necessary for me. It is also argued by some that training (completing your tefl course) in the country you wish to actually teach English in is an optimal arrangement. It is difficult to speculate on the veracity of this claim but it seems as though it would be beneficial, but likely not essential. No matter how prepared one is for a class in a foreign country it seems as if there will always be some things that can only be figured out in the process. Elias Campbell.
