How Teachers Can increase their Confidence in the classroomEntering into a new classroom can be a very frightening thing for any teacher at any stage! But let it be known ? There is much available to us to be able to increase our confidence as a teacher. As we learn and avail ourselves of what is out there, then this world of teaching can become a very pleasant and rewarding career. Confidence is a two way street as the teacher strengthens their skills in it and the confidence builds in the teacher the students can see this. This in turn gives your students confidence in your ability and makes them feel like they will be learning a lot in your class. They will feel like they chose a good class because of you the teacher. So what tools do we as a teacher have available to us to keep growing in our teaching? As we know one of the basic skills in teaching is to really know the materials! How many of us have sat in a classroom with a teacher who was either just reading the material or fumbling through it and we thought, why did I choose this class! Know Your Materials and practice your lessons. Consider your own strengths as well as your weaknesses and how you can enhance and use each. If writing on the board is an issue then it would be really good to practice BEFORE you come to your classroom. Use a lesson plan and make sure that you have all the props you need and they are ready to go. Have extra materials just in case you have extra time or even if you have a situation where you find another worksheet would fit your class better. Be prepared! A prepared teacher is a confident teacher! That is what we want to strive for. Will you be using the tech items such as a recorder? A computer and projector? Powerpoint? Overhead projector? All of these would be situations where you would want to check ahead of time to be sure it all works and you know how to operate them. Be Prepared! Keep up on the latest teaching helps available to you keep a good personal library of supplemental materials. As you learn to try new ideas your confidence will be growing and it will make a difference in your classes. There is a lot out there but as you truly know yourself and your style you will learn how to sort through and find the materials that best suit you and again that will best build your confidence as you grow in your abilities. Keep learning! Realize that the more experience we can gain the better we can be and if you are not able to have all the classes you would like you can watch videos online of teaching that will help you to keep up on what is going on in teaching. Keep learning as you have an opportunity to do so and remember that as a teacher we have an opportunity to shape futures one life at a time.
