Classroom management Classroom management is a term that describes how teachers manage distractions and disruptions in the classroom, whether by preventing them or dealing with them directly as they occur. Classroom management is important because if students in a class get out of order, or are repeatedly disruptive, the students will have more difficulty learning and will be less successful. Studies have shown that poor classroom management can result in decreased classroom engagement. It is likely that many students will become uncomfortable and unhappy in a disruptive environment. Thus, it is important that teachers clearly and effectively communicate their expectations and create a positive learning environment to promote the success of their students. students can act at many different behavioral stages, which often correlate with age. Some students are recalcitrant and may repeatedly refuse to follow directions. Others may just be unmotivated, and need some sort of reward to encourage good behavior. Some students have a sense of discipline, but can occasionally need a reminder to pay attention or participate. Older students usually have a strong sense of self-discipline and more is expected of them. Being gentle with students is necessary to encourage them to develop their own self-discipline. Yelling or being too assertive can discourage students and make them less motivated. There are a lot of different methods by which teachers manage their classrooms. Developing rapport, creating respect, and keeping students motivated are important in classroom management. Treating students equally (not playing favorites) and making sure that students are confident and comfortable, especially when speaking in front of the class, are important aspects of classroom management. Especially with children, rules and discipline are important aspects in making sure that students act responsibly and respectfully. Teachers need to make sure that they are consistent in all aspects of teaching and discipline. There are numerous techniques of classroom management. For example, constantly telling the students what is happening during each class at the beginning of the lesson can encourage students to progress through the lesson. Using non-verbal cues can be an effective and efficient way of focusing students. Constantly monitoring students who are working independently on tasks can encourage them to focus. Preventative techniques can be used to create a comfortable, respectful classroom environment. This includes being fair, always being encouraging and supportive, and creating a classroom contract or a set of rules mutually agreed upon between students and teachers. Such behaviors help to ensure that students are comfortable and have fewer reasons to act out in the classroom. Not all classroom management techniques are successful, and teachers can often discourage their students and create even worse behavior problems. Some examples are: yelling, using tense body language, embarrassing or insulting students, being sarcastic, being physical, being hypocritical, making claims without support, and playing favorites. Corporal punishment was often used in classrooms in the past, but has been almost entirely abandoned, and is outlawed in 31 countries. Time management is another important aspect of classroom management. Making sure that students have time to learn, engage, socialize, and participate in activities is important to make sure that students do not become overwhelmed or stressed, and always know what is coming next. Classroom management is an incredibly important aspect of teaching. Good classroom management techniques can create a fantastic classroom environment, while bad techniques can negatively impact students' ability to learn. Teachers can make a lot of mistakes when managing their classrooms, and need to make sure that they are willing to adapt their techniques to the ages, abilities, and attitudes of their students.
