LESSON PLANNINGIn order for teacher to be effective, he/she has to control the way time is used. Effective teachers systematically and carefully plan their time for much productive use. Effective teaching?s key aspect is to have a plan of what is going to happen in the class room. lesson planning involves much more than making arbitrary decisions about "what I'm going to teach today." Planning would involve setting realistic goals, decisions of how required and supplemental materials and also developing activities. Before starting planning a lesson it is good to set up lesson goals. Lesson goals would determine of what students will have done and accomplished by the end of the lesson. In order to set lesson goals we need to identify: ? Topic for the lesson. Most of the topics usually already determined by textbooks or curriculum, but also it would great for teacher to choose topic by students? interest or developing some authentic materials. ? Linguistic content - vocabulary, grammar, language use. Usually it is also determined by curriculum. ? Communication tasks. These tasks are focused on topics rather than of grammar, they might allow but not require the use of the vocabulary, grammar that?s been presented in the lesson. ? Learning strategies that could go in connection with the lesson. It is something that would motivate students. Effective language learning would include variety of different activities that combine different types of language input and output. So there is basic lesson structure that includes five parts such as, preparation, presentation, practice, evaluation. ? Preparation: Teacher prepares students of what they could expect in this class by outlining some goals and activities, such as different topic discussions or homework review. ? Presentation: Introduction of linguistic and topical content of the lesson. Presentation brings the language input that brings foundation for students? knowledge of the language. It could be followed and presented from the course textbooks where there are given instructions and examples of grammar. There is also important part of presentation ? practice output. Here students can practice of what they?ve been introduced to. It is part of classroom communication that is designed to make learners comfortable producing specific language items. ? Practice: Here students are asked to work in pairs or small groups on a topic-based task with specific outcome. Teacher observes the groups. students have to use any or all of the language that they know with varied communication strategies. ? Evaluation: Teacher could ask students to give examples of how they used the linguistic content and learning or communication strategies. It is useful for o Reinforce material which was presented in the lesson o Gives opportunity for students to ask additional questions about the content o Helps for the teacher to monitor individual student comprehension and learning o Provides closure to the lesson. ? Expansion: This phase allow students to apply what they have just learned. It could be some activities that include out-of-class observation assignments such as finding examples of something and report back to teacher. How to identify some materials and activities? There are two categories of materials for specific lesson ? Materials that are required (course textbooks and lab materials) ? Authentic materials that teacher develops for classroom activities. Required materials expose the information that should be presented in class Authentic materials ? teacher-provided materials ? it is realistic communication activities. o Authentic materials help to solve a true problem or discussing a topic of interest. o They require language use in order to accomplish goals o They allow to use the language skills that students have, rather than using just some forms or vocabulary. Lesson evaluation and revision: Lesson evaluation should be made in order to see the progress if the goals, set up in lesson planning, were reached or not and also to analyze if there should be changes made in methods. Things to remember: Preparation of the lesson should allow for flexible delivery. During classroom interaction teacher needs to make adaptations and add artistry to each lesson plan and classroom delivery.
