Classroom ManagementThe teacher is able to ensure the class is well managed by using different body language techniques. The way a teacher uses their voice, gestures and their body language is highly important in maintaining control of a class. The voice should be controlled in a way that provides clear instruction and explanations to the learners. The volume of the voice and the complexity of the language being used should also be taken into consideration. Eye contact is also highly important, for building rapport with the learners, as well as to portray confidence; in turn, this helps give the learners confidence. Learners should be fully engaged if eye contact is used correctly and there should be limited behavior problems. Eye contact can be used to indicate who is to speak, ensure understanding or maintain discipline and control. Another body language technique that is equally important is the use of gesture. It is very important that the meaning of gestures is understood before the teacher uses them in a lesson. A teacher may use a certain action to indicate answers being wrong or right, to get the learners attention, and to identify who should speak. Aside from the teachers? body language, the way a teacher works the classroom is significant in the students learning. The teacher needs to make decisions on how to arrange the classroom. Orderly rows, horseshoes, group tables, individual tables all have their advantages and disadvantages depending on what activities the teacher has planned. For example, individual tables may be a more appropriate choice for a text or exam, whereas a horseshoe arrangement may be better suited for a lesson that will involve lots of student talking time, group activities and class discussions. The teacher also needs to consider the benefits of learners working alone, in pairs or groups as this will affect the seating arrangement. Also, affected by the seating arrangement is the teachers? position. Using a horseshoe plan, the teacher will position their self in the centre of the shoe, indicating a more relaxed session where the teacher may be a part of the activity. On the other hand, where individual tables are being used, it?s likely that the teacher will stand at the front of the class promoting a more dominant and authoritative role. The way a teacher gives instructions has an effect over the management of a classroom as well. In order to give instructions effectively the teacher needs to have the full attention of the learners. Instructions and explanations needs to be kept very simple. Learners are unlikely to recognize complex language, will become confused, uninterested and possibly behave in a problematic way. In order to keep control of the lesson and ensure a steady flow, the learners should be taught simple instructions such as ?turn to the next page? and ?listen?. Teachers should write instructions on the board, be prepared to prompt learners and use demonstrations in order to help learners identify with what?s being said. If these techniques for successful classroom management are not put into practice, or simply are not enough, we may experience problem behavior. Learners who are bored, discontent, or have low self esteem are most at risk of causing problems. Where class sizes are too large, learners feel pressure from peers or are experiencing problems at home, problem behavior is high risk. In order to prevent such conduct, the teacher should ensure the classroom is set up appropriately, the atmosphere is positive, the rapport between the teacher and the learners is good as well as the relationship between the learners themselves. There needs to be mutual respect. If problem behavior is not prevented, we should ensure it is dealt with immediately, before the situation gets out of control or other learners encourage or join in with disruptions. The teacher should always stay with in the disciplinary code and always stay calm.
