I have found this course to be very beneficial in helping me understand the fundamentals of TEFL. Before taking this course I spent three years as an Assistant Language Teacher in rural japan. Taking the course has helped me look back upon the things I?ve done correctly, things I could have improved upon, and things I was unaware of as a foreign english teacher. Before leaving for Japan I had little formal training on english grammar structures and the terminology behind those structures. Being a native speaker there seemed little need to learn, as I was a fluent english speaker and naturally knew how everything fit together. During my time in Japan I was actually more familiar with the japanese terms for certain grammar structures than I was with the english. For example, if someone asked me what the present progressive form was I would be at a loss, but at the same time if they said genzai shinkou kei I could readily explain how that specific grammar structure was formed. I have found that actually taking the time to learn the terminology behind basic grammar and tenses has greatly improved my ability to explain and teach english. I also found the activity ideas that came along with some of the lessons to be very helpful. As an ALT, sometimes I had trouble thinking of supplemental activities that related to specific course material. Thanks to the ideas provided in the course I am much more confident that I can create quality activities to accompany the lessons. My primary reason for taking this course was to prepare for a new job teaching english in South Korea. The South Korean education system seems much more rigid than what I experienced in Japan. When searching for applicants they seem to take an interest in more experienced and qualified teachers than in many of the other tefl jobs that I have researched. This course has not only improved my resume and increased my pay grade, but has also made me a much more competent and capable teacher. I am looking forward to utilizing the skills I have learned in the classroom.
