Games in the classroomThere are many games used in the classroom, depending on the stage and the reason for choosing the game. Games can be used to break the ice in the engage stage, to encourage students to think about the lesson and to learn new things about the language in the study stage, and games which encourage student participation by having them apply what they have just learned in the activate stage. It is unlikely the students will learn exactly what they are supposed to learn if the teacher fails to come up with a purpose for using each individual game. The teacher should have a well-defined goal in mind, and be able to communicate to the class the rules of the game. If the teacher does not include any game during a lesson, the students (especially younger schoolchildren) could get bored and disinterested in the material very quickly. The main thing a teacher must remember when deciding to use a game in a given lesson is balance. There must be a balance between the student having fun and learning what they are supposed to learn. The student should have fun while learning a new language, but if the students fail to learn the material, the teacher has failed. During the engage state, games are to get the attention of the class. students will not spend much time thinking about answers to questions during this stage. The teacher should structure this stage to get the class interested in the rest of the lesson. Some examples of games during this stage include slow Pictionary (the teacher draws something and the students guess what the drawing is), word linking, fizz buzz, word linking, and many more. These are games, which serve the purpose of the engage stage, to encourage the students to get involved and create some enthusiasm, which will last until the end of the lesson. In the study stage, games are to get the students to improve necessary skills. The teacher should select a game, which will require the class to take time to think about the topic. The teacher may take time to explain the language, or let the students figure it out for themselves. This is the stage where the teacher is most available for questions; they want to make sure the students are correct in how they construct the language. Examples of games during the study stage include hangman, word searches, gap fills, tongue twister, and more. The goal is students will improve in their pronunciation, spelling, meaning, word order, or analysis of sentences depending on the activity used during the stage. In the activate stage, the idea is to get the students to interact and communicate as much as possible in English. students will learn the more they use the language, so games in this stage help to encourage communication between students. The teacher will explain what the students are supposed to do, then step back as the students apply what they have learned thus far. Some examples of the types of games used in this stage involve, role-play, surveys, story building, debates, and more. The games in this stage typically do not have right or wrong answers; it just lets the students demonstrate how well they understand what they learned. As you can see, there are many different types of games used in the classroom. A good teacher does not become too reliant on any one game or activity. If the teacher uses the same game for every lesson, they students would come to expect it and be bored of the game. It is unlikely the students will learn exactly what they are supposed to learn if the teacher fails to come up with a purpose for using each individual game. With so many games to choose from, it is up to the teacher to pick based on what the students will enjoy and learn the most.
