Teaching EFL in a KindergartenTeaching young children is one of the most wonderful experiences a teacher can ever have, because little kids learn naturally, they are highly motivated and open to more learning. But teachers have to be patient, full of smiles and also they need to be motivated by challenges of seeing their students improve day by day. The teachers need to facilitate a learning atmosphere that nurtures motivation. It is very important to show interest in the kid?s lives to make them feel important. It is a necessity to treat the children like adults; they don?t like to be treated like little kids. The teachers have to find out what are the students interested in, like what kind of games, songs, music, or food. It is important to have one day of the week like a ?show and tell? activity, that way the kid will bring something from home they want to share with the class. Another important thing is to use appropriate materials, visuals, books, games, anything for their age so they can understand, easy to work with and have fun learning. As a teacher, is important to have a balance in the activities, the study time and the tests as well as homework. Specialists suggest that ?the student attention is at a peak for the first 15-20 minutes of any class?, we have to take advantage of this moment to present new vocabulary or new lessons so they can learn them easily than when their attention span is all gone or worn down. The school policy is very important to follow because there are rules that everybody has to follow. On the first day the rules have to be given to the students, doesn?t matter the age; the sooner, the better. Let the children know what will happen if they ?break? the rules and it?s important to impose the penalty if any rule is broken. The kids love to be praised and encourage. Praising them have to be well apply, not praising them for doing something very easy or for some misbehavior; when a trouble maker is seeking for attention and having bad conduct or mistreating either the teacher or a classmate, the best way to handle the situation is to ask the ?offender? to stay behind after class and talk to him/her in private, never confronting or humiliating in front of the students. It is a good idea to meet with the parents of the students at the beginning of the course. It would be appropriate to recommend that the school or center arrange the meetings. It is beneficial to inform the parents about what is the teacher going to expect from the students; what they are going to gain from the course; the general perspective in how the teacher want to teach the class; the books and supplementary materials are going to be used; how the children will be tested, evaluated, praised or punished in case of misbehavior; how can the parents help at home with homework, reviews, or assignments. The young learners like communicating and should be encourage to use the language they are learning as much as possible. By creating in the class role-plays and activities that enable them to use their imagination and build up their confidence, always encourage them to use English whenever they can. Their first experience should be enjoyable so children would not only learn from them but also enjoy them. I would highly recommend very detailed tasks, easy directions, vocabulary activities, phonetic drills with a lot of visuals, flash cards, posters, colorful books, pictures, music to sing and dance; kids love that! Children learn best through playing games and most of all constant repetition. Before starting a game is better to show them a lot of pictures, photos or toys so they became familiar with the vocabulary before the game or any new lesson starts. The main purpose of the job of the teacher, doesn?t matter the level or age of the student, is to EDUCATE, the teacher is ?the person who will help the students transform information into knowledge by using the head, hands and heart.?
