English as a Global Language As the World has changed in the last 2 centuries, so has the way people have been communicating. The world is no longer separated by oceans now that communication is no longer bound by distance. It is becoming essential that people need to find a common communication language in order to communicate efficiently. In order for this to happen, people need to find common ground to communicate, thus a common language needs to be the global standard. English should be chosen as that language for many reasons. One reason is that America is the dominate trading nation with a majority of products coming in or out of America. It is much more effective and efficient if you can find a common language to communicate with whom you wish to trade or do business with. People learn to adapt and know that in order to trade and to be proficient at it, they have to learn the language. Non-English speaking people can find a translator that speaks English well, but it comes at a price for them. The price maybe intent or negotiating skills that are lost in translation. Business people are trying to make a profit off of their goods. Therefore, it is more beneficial to learn English themselves rather than hire an outside source to translate it for them. Another reason English has become essential to learn around the globe is that other countries have adapted it as their official language. Part of the reason is because of the expanse of the of English Empire and their colonization in the 1600-1800?s and beyond. If you decide to move to another country and they were once part of the English Empire at one point (i.e. India) in their history, chances are that they will probably have English as their official language. One of the main reasons, in my opinion, that English has become so global and used by more and more people today is that America has been the dominate trade nation for the last century and still is today. Like in the ancient days of Greek, Rome and Persia; the one dominate trading power had control of the language between the world and themselves. If you are the dominate trading power, then everyone wants to do business with you. However America is not like these empires, as it doesn?t wish to expand their boundaries. There are many people that come to America from other countries for other reasons. They come to America for a better life, an education or to work. But in order to do that, they have to learn the language in order to work, study or live and communicate with the people there. What happens when they want to go back to their country and work for someone within their country? That company is willing to learn from what that person has acquired from America and use it to benefit the company in trade relations with America. These are only a few of the reasons why English has become such a prevalent language to learn and speak on a global scale. As a side note, all controlled airspace in the world has adopted English as the only language that can be used. It eliminates any confusion for pilots, thus making the airspace safe.
