Teaching EFL in Kindergarten Teaching EFL kindergarten can certainly be difficult and challenging but like most things, it is quite a rewarding line of work with many benefits. Teaching kindergarten does require a person to have an upbeat attitude, an over abundance of kindness, a stern mind, and a loving heart. For example, most children are wild and can get out of hand; this is where you will be tested. If you can act with kindness rather than anger, you will find that you will actually make friends with the children and this sole outcome can make your whole class run much smoother, even on the worst of days. Usually when teaching kindergarten in another country, you will often come across many difficulties such as communication issues, snobby parents, and reluctant learners who are there because they are brought there by their family ( Mother, Father, Grandparents). Remember that you are the one who must make their learning experience fun and interesting for them by using interactive lesson plans and activities. Utilizing popular games such as Musical Chairs and Hide the Flashcard are some very basic but informative games that can really get kids motivated to learn. Children tend to learn quicker than their adult counter parts but require something very important in the classroom, and that is choral repetition of vocabulary words and sentence structures along with examples of the vocabulary in real life such as Flash Cards and Role play, where you act out the sentences that were just taught with other students. This is a vital aspect of teaching young learners since their pronunciation skills are not fully developed yet and their attention span is quite limited. These kinds of exercises can get the whole class involved but also can cause a lot of boredom. A fun way to make these exercises interesting is to take a popular kids song such as ?London Bridge? and have the kids sing the vocabulary with the melody of said song. This can help to keep the kids attention and also helps get the new words/ sentences stuck in their heads. Another important thing to remember is that you should not expect to have the students understand most of what you teach the first time round, and this is why patience is one of the most important requirements to teach EFL in Kindergarten. If you don't have patience, than getting through a day of (8 ? 10) 45 minute long classes will be next to impossible. Something else to bear in mind is that you must be prepared well before the classes commence. Having a proper structured lesson plan filled with fun and entertaining activities and games will not only make your life as a teacher much easier but this will also help you transition seamlessly from one activity to the next. Making the students wait for even for 5 minutes will seem like an eternity to them and this can disrupt the whole flow of the class. Than after you have made up your mind about what to do , the class will have already descended into chaos, and from this you must work your way back up to order again. All in all, you must certainly consider the outcome of your choice to teach EFL in Kindergarten. On the positive side, you have the benefits of learning how to be patient, showing understanding to those who need it, and a special connection with children that may very well brighten your day and lift your spirits. The negative side of course is the long hours of repetitive lessons and crazy screaming children day in and day out. If you think that you can handle it, then I say give it a chance. It certainly has worked for me and I love my work. Thank you all at ITTT for making this possible!
