Teaching Beginner StudentsAs a beginner teacher of English I will have thoughts running through my head. Will I cope and will I be any good as a teacher and accepted by the students. Obviously I will have some anxiety about meeting the students for the first time. I suppose the students will have the same but this will be avoided to some degree if they are monolingual and I am in their country. They have a common ground. So, initially as the teacher I will focus on student and group personalities, building a class report, ensuring routine and I have a structure to my lesson planning, providing varied interesting activities and worksheet exercises. After communication, the main focus of a language lesson, I would begin to teach more simple grammar structures and vocabulary. I would eventually increase and emphasise accuracy of the grammar and vocabulary in speaking, writing and reading. Course materials initially can used as the guideline to present and practice a variety of activities that are of interest and motivating for the students to learn. I would still need to emphasise fluency and accuracy of the language. Before the curriculum can be implemented the teacher needs to have an understanding of the needs of individual students as well as the whole class. Therefore the course curriculum does not need to be implemented on day one. The teacher also needs to identify their learning abilities and existing language knowledge. This will help facilitate student learning and provide an appropriate learning ambience. For example absolutely beginners and beginners (Roman alphabet unknown), this type of student would I feel, initially prefer a less formalized and structured approach to language learning. This would provide a more comfortable pace for them to learn, as continued repetition of vocabulary and grammar in small group/student pairs will feel to them a more relaxed atmosphere. As they progress in their studies, the teacher can then focus more on language accuracy. So for the students, they go from no English to being able to produce some simple sentences which will feel a great achievement and maintain their motivation. Young beginners especially under seven years will have little attention span and the self-motivation to study. They need a lot of encouragement and motivation to study. It seems that can dislike repetitiveness with lengthy monotonous exercises and home work. They do not relish being teacher corrected. Therefore this type of student craves variety, easily achievable success and that they are able to experiment speaking in numerous situations. The adult beginner learner will require more information about what is being learnt. However the teacher also needs to determine the student needs and desires, as well as the purpose of them studying a new language. The reluctant learner who is there because he has to be, ( employment, educationally imposed) maybe less motivated and so an initial relaxed approach, with varied topics and repetition of grammar may help themis the to feel more encouraged to learn. The student beginner in the monolingual class can readily return to their native language. However for the teacher who is aware of their language, this may cause difficulties for himself and the student learning, if he resorts to using their language to explain all the time. Therefore giving the students encouragement to continually speak English in the class will be of benefit Not all words and phrases can exactly translate from one language to another, and there are English words spelt the same but can be used in sentences and have a different meaning. We all have good and bad days and so do students. A teacher who is respected usually will have motivated students within his class. Teachers who appear to care and demonstrate empathy and being able to adjust their lessons accordingly to meet the needs of the student will gain a better student ? teacher feedback from the language lesson. Having worked in the caring professions I am aware of cultural backgrounds, respecting their customs, traditions and beliefs, as well as their own native language. students need to be reassured that they will not be humiliated or intimidated within the classroom. Teacher talking time within the lesson should be reduced but what should not be is the listing teacher. This teacher knows when to talk. The teacher is aware that the student needs to contribute to the curriculum and to each other?s learning, with the teacher providing exercises and activities to enhance this ability. Always giving criticism to beginner student will have an impact on their motivation and willingness to learn a new language. Therefore using more encouragement say in the ratio of 3 to 1 will help the teacher and student to become a more effective teacher and learner. The beginner student needs to feel supported and have a listening teacher who will be monitoring student strengths and weaknesses and adjust his teacher delivery and his study materials accordingly. As cultures influence language learning the teacher's initial approach on first meeting the students will have either positive or negative outcomes. For example some students will be very sensitive about making mistakes, seeking accuracy in language learning. Some students are reluctant to participate in speaking activities. The students will benefit from a more relaxed class room, as the teacher repeats the use of sentences and structures followed initially by whole class repetition. The teacher needs to be sensitive to the needs of the beginner whoever and wherever they are teaching.
