Classroom ManagementClassroom management may be one of the hardest challenges for a new or experienced esl teacher. It is always a challenge to find a healthy balance between being a teacher, a mentor, a friend and a disciplinarian. All teachers want to establish a good rapport with their students and want to be liked. However, in many cases there may be a child or two who acts unruly, disobedient, or unresponsive. This is where the difficulty arises. A teacher asks himself/herself how strict they should be or how they should to react to such students. There are a number of things a teacher can do to make these kinds of decisions as well as a number of things a teacher can do to prevent these kinds of problems from occurring. From the beginning a teacher should be aware of the rules and regulations of the school. When a teacher knows what the school expects of the students, he or she should feel more confident in their disciplinary actions. A teacher should be clear with the students about what he/she expects of them. They should also be clear on what will happen if the students do not follow the rules. For example, the first time you misbehave you will get a warning, the second time you misbehave you will have to sit outside the classroom for a period of time, and the last time you misbehave your parents will be called. A teacher should make sure that they are fair and consistent when carrying out the rules of the classroom. Children are sensitive to unfairness. After the students know the rules, some may still act out. It is important to try and figure out why the student is acting out. Is he or she bored, tired, confused about the lesson, unconfident, or having problems at home? A teacher needs to make sure that his/her lessons are interesting and at the level of the students. This will save the teacher from dealing with bored and uninterested kids. If this is not applicable, a teacher may want to pull the student aside after class and have a personal discussion with him/her. It is good to find out what the needs of the student are try to address then without being hard on them in front of the other students. This may make matters worse. Lastly a good teacher should praise the good behavior of the students. students respond better to words of encouragement and praise then to criticism. A teacher should never speak to a student destructively. Instead, they should reward the better-behaved students with prizes or praise. The sticker board is a good way to encourage all the students to behave. You give each student a sticker everyday they are well behaved. You choose haw many days you want to do it for. At the end of the time period students with a certain amount of stickers will receive prizes. Games that encourage good behavior have been extremely effective in the classroom because students like to have the approval of their teachers. Clearly defining rules and regulations, addressing each students personal needs and positive reinforcement are just a few ways in which a teacher can affectively manage his or her classroom. Each teacher has his/her own style. How ever, according to many online accounts and tesol/TEFL programs these three things are highly successful.
