This unit covered modal and phrasal verbs as well as the passive voice. Modal verbs concern obligation, possibility, permission, ability and advice. The main modal verbs include: may, should, could, might, must and have to. There are two types of voices: active and passive. Active is focused on the subject. Passive is focused on the object. Passive is used when the actor is not known or is unimportant. This unit focuses on the different uses of modals, and how each describes a different degree of certainty, politeness, or obligation. Phrasal verbs are categorized into different types, and can be taught systematically by type, to learner. Passive voice is also introduced in this unit, and students can use it when they want to put more focus on the action itself rather than the person doing the action.
