In this unit we covered how to teach new language. Specifically, we learned how to teach new vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. When teaching new vocabulary, we should be aware that students can usually understand or identify more vocabulary items than they tend to actually use. When choosing vocabulary to teach, we should keep in mind how relevant the vocabulary is to each student, and how useful the vocabulary is to foster communication. Teaching new grammar is covered next in the unit. For grammar lessons, a boomerang or patchwork type of ESA lesson may be most appropriate. Finally, we learned about teaching new language functions, such as inviting, declining, disagreeing, or suggesting.
