There are 4 basic skills in any language - reading, listening, speaking and writing. All are equally important. This unit taught me the different areas of reading and listening, such as skimming and scanning. While it's certainly acceptable to focus on a single skill for a lesson, it would be helpful to incorporate aspects of the others to create an integrated skills lesson. When selecting topic, text and material, there are several factors the teacher to take into consideration. The topics should interest and motivate the students and should be varied over time. The example patchwork ESA lesson in the unit provided great insight into how to expose students to the language skills in a related manner.
