This unit breaks down modals and phrasal verbs as well as differentiates the active voice from the passive voice. The unit demonstrates the subcategories of phrasal verbs to help distinguish between those that lose or change meaning depending upon syntax and those that do not. Because these are highly nuanced differences, the unit explains that English language learners will often have difficulty learning them as a grammatical concept. Instead, I learned that it is helpful to introduce phrasal verbs as pieces of vocabulary. With respect to the passive voice, I learned that a common technique students overuse is to say or write \"by ...\" when the passive voice without the actor is perfectly acceptable.
