This unit discusses the approach to learning a new language in terms of the considerations for selecting what vocabulary to introduce and what students need to know; the teaching of new grammatical structures; and the teaching of new language functions such as formal and informal ways to accept and refuse an invitation and appropriate ways to agree and disagree. Suggested ESA lesson content for these teaching tasks is given, ranging from a simple straight arrow lesson for beginner level, through to a patchwork lesson for more advanced students. This unit has given me more insight into the use of straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork ESA lesson planning and how they relate to different learning levels.
