There are different ways to evaluate student's progress. The most common way is test. At the beginning of the course the teacher can give to the student a placement test or a diagnostic test. In order to revise and review the teachers use a progress test. If the student is going to pass an external exam he should do a lot of practice tests. There are a lot of international examinations such as Cambridge Assessment or General External examinations and others. In my opinion teachers shouldn't rely only on testing system to check student's language level. Tests don't often show the real knowledge of a student but only memory. The teacher may observe and monitor his students on regalar basis in the classroom.
