Unit 13 introduced basic aspects of phonology, such as intonation, stress, pronunciation, phonemics, and articulation. The main difference between stress and intonation is that stress generally refers to a single word, while intonation refers to the flow of an entire sentence. Pronunciation was approached in a few different ways. The Unit went over phonemic symbols for different sounds and the physical articulation of these sounds made by the placement of different parts mouth. In addition to this, concepts such as sound joining and linked speech were introduced as important aspects of making conversational English sound more natural, as fluency and talking speed can affect pronunciation of certain words.
