Unit 5 Overview A classroom that promotes good student behavior and encourages good communication and effective learning is often main goal of many teachers. Since the teacher is the one to manage the class, he/she needs to find effective ways to achieve it. This unit starts by explaining about good eye contact, gesture and voice in the classroom. A teacher?s physical presence and voice play a major role in classroom management. Knowing how to use these things properly will translate to better and more productive class sessions. Good eye contact is necessary if a teacher wants the involvement of all the students. A teacher should be able to maintain eye contact when necessary and appropriate because some students may feel uncomfortable. Next part of the unit describes various arrangements for the class and how teachers can implement it in their classroom. The arrangement depends on several factors such as: class size, types of chairs and tables, age of students, type of class activity, and size of the classroom, nationality, and student personality. Also, we find here explanation about giving individual attention. Keeping all the students involved throughout the lesson is a very challenging task for a teacher. What we can do is to get to know all students names, not just some. At the same time try to keep all students occupied even when the teacher is busy with others. Additionally, we have to try to not teach exclusively to certain students. It may negatively affect others. A teacher should also not ask ask questions to students in order, it?s very predictable, and it?s easy to lose focus. Furthermore, the teacher should include all students equally in any activity. Having and showing favoritism in classroom is always damaging. Giving instructions is also an important part of this unit. I always struggled with the question if I was clear enough or not. Now I understand that the teacher has to get the attention of the students before giving instructions by : using simple language, lower than the student's current level of understanding, be consistent with language and use visual clues with demonstrations. Lastly, I learned about problem behavior and how to deal when it arise. Reasons for problem behavior can be: family problems, low self-esteem, boredom, peer pressure, lack of respect, class size and teacher not showing authority. There are ways to prevent these problems like giving more individual time to the students. Engage them and ask simple questions they are sure to understand, and then praise them. Sometimes the class can be too noisy or distracted because of large number. This is easy to solve ? break into small groups with tables and devote attention to each table. These are the major points of the class management. I could see that it covers so many important aspects that are essential to the creation of an effective learning environment. I hope I can implement all of them and have a better result.
