In knowing how to manage a classroom a teacher needs to be aware of the options and resource they have even just with their physical presence and the way they set up the classroom. The teachers relationship to the students can change in the way they use eye contact, gestures and voice. All of these things can help keep students engaged and interested in the lesson, to know they are seen, to be encouraged to speak and it will help with understanding through the use of gestures or miming that may match the simple things being said. Plus, a teachers use of voice can help students listen more intently or keep their interest if the teacher is excited and dynamic. Furthermore, the way a teacher spaces the students, or arranges the class, and then themselves in relationship to the students can help the success of a classroom. While there is no hard and fast set way to do this, there are certain ideas that have proven true. Such as large classes of 25 students or more would really not have any option for seat arrangements besides orderly rows and the teacher at the front, and visible. However, a smaller group could be arranged in a circle or a horseshoe, which can help it feel more intimate, allow for easier pair work and also allow for eye contact between the whole class. There is also the option for separate tables, which allows for the ease of group work but can also lead to the class feeling more divided or teamed into these small groups and not one large class. No matter how the teacher arranges the classroom, there is still the need to adjust the way in which they use their stature and position around the class. Meaning during certain times the teacher will need to be standing and visible by all students when lecturing or giving instructions. If the teacher has given activity or reading they can be seated and let the students be uninterrupted but it is also good to be ready to monitor, but not impede their work. In order to avoid losing too much eye contact and interaction with the students, the teacher can prepare board work information during students activity time, before class or even have students write on the board. The issue of managing a classroom means that the area of behavior and discipline comes in as a factor. If the teacher has gained good rapport and has shown the same respect to their students that they want, then it may be easier to manage disciplinary problems. These issues are also affected by many factors such as age of students, their self-esteem, the rules and style of the school, their motivation and respect of others in the class. Depending on if issues arise, the teacher will need to possible address the student privately afterwards, and focus on the behavior problem and not the person. Asking for help from colleagues is a very helpful method in knowing how to deal with disciple. Developing rapport and a positive work environment to me seems to be key and I believe this will be done through a positive teaching style and a teacher that shows their students they really care and take interest in them as individuals.
