Teach English in HuanggAng Zhen - Chaozhou Shi
The course for young learners can be developed in various ways, but before we classify the students in groups we should provide level testing and needs analysis. The level tests are the most suitable way to check the student?s ability of the use of English language. They are usually organized as multiple choice questions and they start from easier to more difficult. In this way we can easily classify the students in groups according to their level: starter, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate. After we have gained some knowledge about the student?s level it is advisable to carry out a needs analysis which will help teachers to set some class rules, to focus on the students? needs and expectations, to work out the preliminary syllables etc. They are usually composed as a questionnaire. Being a teacher can be sometimes challenging especially when teachers are faced with some limiting factors such as: employers who might have decided what should be taught and what not, time constraints-which will limit the options when making the syllabus, resources-which will be of a great help if we have access to them, cultural issues and students. A successful course depends on the planning that precedes it. A syllabus has several functions. The first function is to invite students to your course--to inform them of the objectives of the course and to provide a sense of what the course will be like. The second function is to provide a kind of contract between instructors and students ? to document expectations for assignments and grade allocations. The third function is to provide a guiding reference. Several distinct types of language teaching syllabus exist, but I will mention only three: 1. \"A structural (formal) syllabus.\" The content of language teaching is a collection of the forms and structures, usually grammatical, of the language being taught. Examples include nouns, verbs, adjectives, statements, questions, subordinate clauses, and so on. 2. \"A notional/functional syllabus.\" The content of the language teaching is a collection of the functions that are performed when language is used, or of the notions that language is used to express. Examples of functions include: informing, agreeing, apologizing, requesting; examples of notions include size, age, color, comparison, time, and so on. 3. \"A situational syllabus.\" The content of language teaching is a collection of real or imaginary situations in which language occurs or is used. Assessment involves collecting and using information about student learning. There are several types of tests that focus on different needs: diagnostic, placement, aptitude, achievement, proficiency and progress tests. . No matter what kind of test teachers are assigning, they should always try to ensure that: The tests are marked shortly after being taken, they provide the instructions and suggestions etc. Students can be also prepared for specific Examinations in English. The CYLE tests are at three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. For further adult examinations KET and PET tests are available.
