Listening and reading are the two receptive skills that were the focus in this unit. They are two of the basic skills besides speaking and writing. There are two reasons for listening and reading, and there are several skills that students will need to apply in order to benefit and help their understanding while reading and listening. Some of these skills are predictive, scanning, and skimming. It's important for the teacher to use varied topics of interest when teaching receptive skills, so students will be engaged and motivated. Confidence can be built in the students if the teacher is careful in selecting materials and pre-teaches some vocabulary to assist the students alongside their own 'discovery' of words.
