The motivations for students learning a second language are varied, but it would be safe to say creating lessons based on the interests of the students garners the most active responses. In addition, in my experience, using real-world examples or situations also encourages active participation for even students of the lowest ability, since they see themselves being able to utilize the language being taught. For example, I have used a straight-arrow ESA lesson similar to the one mentioned in the questions above. The topic was interesting commercials, which culminated in the students having to create their own commercial. It was highly successful and allowed them to use new vocabulary in a fun, engaging, and real-world way.
