I really appreciated the helpful tip that the first lesson should be used to establish rapport and engage students allowing them to see what class could be like. Often, it is easy to forget the basic principles of people skills when we have such a great task (teaching English) before us. I have seen others (and known myself to do the same) forgo introductions and icebreakers and dive into learning moments. Often, people need to be warmed up. More so, students need to feel a degree of comfort and familiarity with their group and teacher before exposing themselves to mistakes and errors. From my previous work, I saw this happen, when teachers were most reluctant to allow for pairs and group discussions before demanding answers.
