This unit focuses on course books and various other materials. It describes the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book during the lessons, and it goes into detail analyzing when, how and how much a teacher should use it. Course material can be divided into two main categories : \"Authentic\" or \"Created\". We do not live in an ideal reality, so a teacher is very often required to create his/her own material to either substitute, supplement or enhance what is found inside the coursebook. While the book can provide a reliable source of finely graded material, it is often not enough or unsuited for some reason, and it can also be boring/unrealistic and thus not good to rely on too much. Authentic material is thus necessary, be it extracted from some newspaper or the lyrics of a song or an interview or whatever, because it provides a realistic and interesting topic that can spark the active interest of most students. Created material can be, for example, flash cards, gap-filling exercises etc, obviously created on purpose by the teacher with a specific aim in mind.
