The productive skills are speaking and writing, because learners doing these need to produce language. They can be compared with the receptive skills of listening and reading. Although difficult, writing and speaking are essential for communication. Many factors influence the difficult of teaching productive skills, such as, alphabet differences in native language, the exposure to phonetic language prior, and especially the spelling of like words and congruent words (i.e. peel vs. peal and read). Teachers should take caution when approaching this subject as it needs much time and repeated exposure, students may even need individualized help in these areas. Teachers should remain patient and understanding, not jumping to every correction every time they hear a mistake. It may be helpful for the teacher to write down mistakes as they notice them, if these mistakes happen often and among a wide range of students, maybe another lesson will be required to clear up any confusion. Using games can be very beneficial in this stage. Be creative and keep the students encouraged.
