This unit focused on teaching and learning. One helpful portion of this was on teaching groups. I usually teach classes of around thirty students in which there is usually a wide range of different levels. Some students have difficulty making simple sentences that are grammatically correct while others have obviously had extensive exposure to English. In these situations, I have found it helpful to place higher level students with lower level students in order for the lower level students to learn from their more advanced peers. However, this unit suggested using graded activities for the different levels of students. I have never tried this before and although it will require more planning, I would like to try this approach. Hopefully by doing this, the more advanced students will not be bored and the lower level students will become more motivated to improve to the level of their advanced peers after seeing more difficult tasks being performed. In other words, this can give lower level students a measurable goal which they can try to achieve by the end of the course.
