Teaching new language consists of teaching new vocabulary, teaching grammatical structures and teaching language functions. When selecting new vocabulary it is important to select that which is appropriate to the students and the task, vocabulary which will be used frequently to the level of the students and vocabulary which is teachable to the ability of the students. A straight arrow type of lesson is the best way of teaching new vocabulary. The grammatical structures which should be taught are largely determined by level of the class and the course syllabus being used and in all cases the students will need to know the meaning of the language, how it is used, how it is formed grammatically and how it is said/written. A boomerang or a patchwork type of lesson is the best way to teach grammatical structures. Language functions include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing and disagreeing and suggesting. Language function lessons should stress the need for activation of language and, therefore boomerang and/or patchwork type of lessons are the best way to teach them.
