This unit covered the two receptive skills: reading and listening, and how to teach the two skills effectively. From this unit, my own language learning experiences, and my teaching experience, I had already a basic understanding of the topics introduced in this unit, but it was helpful to have specific things laid out for me. For example, the types of skills needed (predictive, scanning, skimming, etc.). What was also important to me was getting to know my students so I could provide material for them that they would find interesting. In the past I have had the opportunity to watch movies with my students in class, and found that some of the weaker students had paid more attention and came to enjoy English because the movie we had watched had piqued their interest. Initially, I wasn?t sure they would be interested, but from that experience I had tried and successfully selected other movies and activities that interested other students. From this unit, it was reassuring to know that I had taken the correct steps to help my students to engage with material and the language.
