It was very interesting for me to read through this section on methodology as I took a course on Second Language Acquisition that was focused on task-based instruction and the ways to implement it in your classroom. Although this section outlines a few different methodologies (task-based, PPP, the lexical approach, communicative approach, etc), it prepares you for the rest of the course which assumes the use of ESA. Thus, most of the lesson is specific examples of games and activities to use in each phase of the ESA method (Engage, Study, and Activate). Very basically, the stages fulfill the following purposes: Engage-- piques students' interest and gets them involved in using English; Study-- more explicit teaching of the target grammar, starting with elicitation from the students; Activate-- authentic language use (preferably incorporating new and prior knowledge) in communicative activities. Overall, this section will be one that I will be returning to for the many great activity ideas that fit easily into the ESA format (whether 'straight-arrow', 'boomerang', or 'patchwork'.
