This unit is about troubleshooting the expected problems a EFL teacher might encounter. One situation that every EFL teacher will experience is the first lesson with a their class. In the first lesson the teacher must build rapport between themselves and the students, and potentially build rapport between the students if the class is entirely new. As such teachers should not jump right into grammar exercises but instead begin with warmer activities. Another problem scenario that can be expected is the different levels of students. This can be dealt with through pairing stronger and weaker students, using different material for stronger students, or using the same material but making it more difficult or simple as needed. Large classes also present a challenge which can be dealt with by using group work, choral exercises, and worksheets. It is imperative to remind students to communicate in English as that is the purpose of the class. Imperfect English is better than students using their native language. Reluctant students are to be encouraged but never to be forced to participate.
