Unit 14 focuses on course books and materials. There are authentic and non-authentic (or created) materials. An authentic material covers anything that a native speaker would hear or read, while created materials are designed and graded specifically for students of a particular level. Students can gain more confidence from using and understanding authentic material; they may also become more motivated when the material is geared towards their interests. Teachers can also create their own materials for students that are graded to their level. Unit 14 provides a sample of created materials (crossword, word search, picture stories, flash cards, and role play cards). The unit details the typical set of materials that course books may include. While using course books has many advantages, there are also disadvantages to them and should be used wisely and effectively. A teacher should not rely solely on a course book and should aim to add variety and a balance of authentic materials in their lessons. Unit 14 also provides tips for analyzing and choosing the best course book for students.
