This unit cover methods for evaluation and testing. While some teachers may be able to gauge their students' levels, strengths, and weaknesses from spending time with them in the classroom, tests still remain a useful way to measure those strengths and weaknesses. There are several different types of tests that can be used in the English classroom. Placement tests are used before a course begins as a way to determine a student's current level, and this kind of test is often use as a way to put students with similar levels together and for the teacher to understand the student's current abilities. Another type of testing covered in this unit is external examinations, which are usually conducted not within the classroom but by the organization conducting the test. These tests are used for various reasons; for instance, TOEFL is an American English exam used by most American universities for admission purposes if the student is not a native English speaker. While these tests are not done in the classroom, practice tests can be used in the classroom as a way to prepare for the real exam.
