Teach English in Tiankan Yizu XiAng - Bijie Shi
The first lesson should not include material from the course book, but is more of an opportunity to build rapport with students, get to know each other and for the teacher to assess needs. Warmer games are great for the first class, which include hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. Different English levels can be dealt with by using different materials, and using the same material but with different tasks. Teachers can also pair stronger students with weaker ones. Large classes can be dealt with by group work, using worksheets, choral repetition, and appointing group leaders. Use of native language should rarely occur from the teacher. The teacher can avoid native language use by providing material and lessons where students can cope with the material, and being clear with your explanations and instructions. Reminding the students and only responding to them in English is also a good way to avoid use of native language. Reluctant students can benefit from pair work, use of role-play or using controlled practice. It is important not to single out reluctant students.
