Preparing a lesson plans creates a logical sequence of events for the lesson by providing an aid to planning, a working document that can be referred to throughout the lesson, as well as a record of the lesson in the event that the teacher is unable to teach that particular day and needs to call in a substitue teacher. A lesson plan should be kept simple, document the time felt needed for a particular activity or part of the lesson plan, and should be flexible. Organization is key to a successful lesson plan and should include the learner's objective, the teacher personal aims, procedure, time (vital) and focus. It should also take into accountability for teacher/student (T/S), student/teacher (S/T) and student to student (S/S) time. The various phases of the lesson should be thought out (Engage/Study/ Activate) and the materials and activities should be included, again, along with the time intended for each of those phases and activities. In addition, a teacher's lesson plan should also include his/her personal aims and monitoring of themselves as a teacher and the lesson planned.
