This unit was particularly fun, as I've always been interested in learning the basics of linguistics. Unit 13 thoroughly studies the way that pronunciation is executed by discussing intonation, stress and articulation with the aid of a diagram of the speech organs and the introduction and explanation of the phonetic alphabet. This unit was particularly interesting because it combined the intricacies of these areas with teaching strategies. When learning how to pronounce English words as a native English speaker, it was never integral to know the specific mechanisms behind articulation, but the way the unit reviews these habits is integral for individuals who speak languages with different articulations and sounds. It was surprising that pronunciation is an often-overlooked aspect when teaching English because pronunciation seems to be key for successful communication. Personal experience has shown me how important pronunciation is, as it can often be difficult for me to understand the pronunciation of EFL students,, despite their abilities to properly read and write in English.
