In unit one I gained a better understanding of what makes a good teacher, a good learner, their motivations, and the levels of language understanding. I now understand that to be a good teacher I need to be patient, kind, engaging, motivating, and able to gauge my responses to each individual student's weaknesses. I also learned that a good learner will be engaged, motivated, accept correction, experiment, and think about their own learning processes. Students of different ages will be motivated and engaged in different ways. An adult learner will more likely be more engaged in the learning process, having chosen to learn the language themselves, while a younger student will more likely be less invested. Normally a young learner has not chosen to learn the language. In contrast, a young learner will engage with the material more easily. The pick up the language like it's their own, while an adult learner compares the new language to their first. Besides understanding student motivations, I also now know the six different levels of understanding a foreign language, beginner to advanced.
