Unit 3 explores theories, methodologies and techniques used to teach ESL. The unit provides summaries of ten commonly used teaching methods, including Grammar-translation, Audio-lingualism, and Task-Based Learning. The unit then goes into great detail about the teaching method known as Engage, Study, Activate (ESA). This method is appropriate for new teachers. It is also the primary method presented in this TEFL Certificate class. Major components of the ESA process are summarized. The process of involving students in their own learning --- Elicitation --- is discussed in detail. Various methods of accomplishing this are outlined including, the use of Real Objects (balls), Flashcards, Drawings, and Gap-fill sentence exercises. The three elements of ESA are clearly defined and summarized. Various ways of organizing an ESA lesson are presented. Examples of the many different exercises which can be used during each of the ESA elements are covered. The final part of the unit discusses recommended approaches to giving students feedback as well as correcting their mistakes and errors.
