This Unit teaches the 2 Receptive Skills - Listening and Reading Listening and Reading can be done for pleasure or for achieving a goal. For example, when we read or listen to instructions to be followed, it is for a specific goal whereas, when we listen or read cartoon movies or books, it is for pleasure. Sometimes, listening or reading can be done for both achieving a goal as well as for pleasure. The listeners or readers understanding of the content depends on the experience or expertise in the areas of Predictive Skills, Scanning skills, Skimming skills, Detailed Information or deduction from text. There can be problems in listening and reading, for example, the vocabulary, the language or the topic of interest. These problems can be overcome by teaching the students the meanings of difficult words and by carefully selecting topics which generates interest and motivation in them.The the student should be given tasks to determine whether they are able to learn and understand.
