This unit explained that there are 4 basic skills in language - receptive (reading and listening) and productive (speaking and writing). Each of these is equally important and they should all be incorporated into any given lesson, even if one is focused on more heavily than the others. Our motivations for reading and listening will vary between reading/listening for a purpose or reading/listening for entertainment and each sometimes we will do a little of both. We will pay different levels of attention depending on our purpose. Comprehending language is not only about being receptive but also applying our world knowledge to make sense of the terminology. We apply specialist skills in certain scenarios to predict, skim, scan, deduce etc. information from the text or dialogue. When teaching from a particular text, it may be relevant to pre-teach vocabulary so that the students understand the terms as they are used. Texts must also be carefully selected to be not only relevant and interesting to the students but also at a level where they will receive benefit from them and not be confused.
