To put it simply, the English language is difficult, and whoever invented it slightly sadistic. As a native English speaker who has taken language courses throughout his life, grammar is still a tough set of rules to remember perfectly. Imagining learning these rules as a second language would be quite a feat and, as a teacher, I will need to empathize with these obstacles, maintain great patience, and be creative in how I deliver this type of material. I think it is important to not over-emphasize the importance of these rules as well. Students could make themselves sick or terrified to speak if they felt that they could only speak if they fully understood these rules. When learning German in high school, my teacher was far too preoccupied with teaching us the grammar rules than allowing us to practice the language. This resulted in very low confidence in speaking the language, and to this day, I know very little German. My main take-away is that it is important to understand the basic framework for English and grammar, but unnecessary to be able to regurgitate these rules on command.
