I learned that in a first lesson, it is most important to get to know the students, their interests, their needs, and their level of English. You must make them feel comfortable with you as the teacher and with each other. Warm-up activities should be fun and engaging, not about difficult grammar. Large class are difficult to organize, but there are a number of activities that can include all students, like worksheets and choral drilling. You can also break them up into pairs or groups. Most classes have differing levels of English skill within them. You can give different assignments to different students based on their skill level, or break them up in pairs, so the stronger ones can help the weaker ones. Some students are reluctant to share because of either cultural reasons or intimidation. Give them time to practice before making them share. Put them in pairs or groups with other students so they feel safe to share. Let them role-play so that they can practice in a fun way. When deciding when to move on from a task, wait until most of the class is done with their work.
